As a former and current member of the Board of Directors I have served on compensation and audit committees and have provided expertise related to merger and acquisition activities. In some instances, I have been an investor in the company. At other times my service has been to offer financial insight and strategic thinking to the leadership team.
Having served family-owned business entities for more than 40 years I have been asked to serve on Advisory Boards. In this role, I do not exercise legal authority or control as Directors do, but rather provide strategic insight and financial expertise as requested. This has been a more appropriate role for a sole owner or a family-owned company where a formal board of directors is not yet required.
On a limited basis, I have served as Special Advisor to the Board of Directors. In this role I am not an officer or a member of the management team. This is usually for a one-time event or transaction. In one case, I provided strategic advice and counsel to a client company for a period of several years.
Over the course of my career, I have served for-profit startup companies as well as well-established enterprises, including a 120 years old, multigenerational business. My for-profit board experience has spanned a wide variety of industries and ownership structures .
Further, my board experience has been service to a variety of not-for- profit organizations, including private schools, foundations, continuing care retirement communities, and faith-based organizations.
